For Owner Kevin McCarthy, Capt’n 4 Hire has been a lifetime in the making.
His passion for the boating lifestyle began at his grandparents’ summer home on Squam Lake in the Lakes Region of NH when he was just five or six years old.
He fondly recalls gathering on the dock with his sisters and cousins, as they wore a rut in the lake endlessly circling the cove with skiers in tow. He loved watching his older cousins and uncles perched at the end of the dock, jump onto a single wooden slalom ski just as the boat took up slack in the rope. He learned pretty quickly that boating was a social thing, and a family thing.
And, a few years later, when he got his first power boat at just ten years old, he learned it was also a freedom thing. Something he still believes strongly today. He hopped on that 13’ Boston Whaler and waved goodbye to his mother who stood upon the shore and experienced something brand new... FREEDOM! He realized then he was the captain of his own destiny.
Twenty years and several boats later, he found himself in the Pacific Northwest pondering what to do with his life. He wanted to blend his passion with his career and as he looked out over Puget Sound, the answer became clear. So, he enrolled in Captains Training School and took a job aboard a tour boat, ready to blaze his own path.
Since then, Kevin’s life and career path has taken him to some incredible places where he’s gained invaluable experience learning from and working alongside some of the best captains in the business.
As a captain, he’s traveled some fascinating routes like the Bahamas to the Caribbean as far south as Grenada. He then completed a trip around the Great Loop with extended cruising on the Great Lakes. That voyage exposed him to the NY Canal System as well as adding another trip down the ICW.
From large yachts to small cruisers, water-taxis to tow boats, dinner cruise boats to whale watch boats, Kevin’s experience is robust.
Once he met his wife Sylvia, Kevin settled into raising a family in NH where he used his knowledge of boats in different ways including boat sales, managing marinas, and working in vessel manufacturing where he gained tremendous knowledge (and credibility).
